Does the length of the fingers indicate our sexual orientation?
What does our finger length say about our sexuality? When it comes to the statements of British researchers, the length of the fingers in people indicates the sexual orientation of the person concerned. So is it enough to look at your hands to determine your sexual orientation?
The University of Essex researchers found that simply looking at people's finger lengths can be enough to predict their sexual orientation. The doctors published the results of their study in the English-language journal "Archives of Sexual Behavior".
What does the length of the index finger and ring finger say?
In their study, the experts examined several groups of identical twins, one of whom was heterosexual. There were 18 pairs of female twins and 14 of male twins. The researchers noticed that, on average, the homosexual twins had a greater difference between the length of the index finger and the ring finger.
Testosterone in the womb affects finger length
Previous studies have shown that exposure to the male hormone testosterone in the womb can be associated with differences in the length of the fingers. The index and ring fingers are typically of a similar length in women, but there is usually a greater difference in men. The scientists noticed that among the 18 female twins, the lesbian twin sisters had hands that were more typical of men than the hands of their heterosexual sister. In the 12 male pairs, the homosexual twin had slightly more pronounced male hands compared to the heterosexual brother, but the difference was not considered to be really significant, the doctors explain.
Twins can have different sexual orientations
Since identical twins, who share 100 percent of their genes, can differ in their sexual orientations, factors other than genetics must be responsible for the differences, explains study author Dr. Tuesday Watts from the University of Essex.
Does testosterone determine our sexual orientation?
Research suggests that our sexuality is determined in the womb and is dependent on the amount of male hormone we are exposed to or the way our individual bodies respond to this hormone, the experts claim. When people in the womb are exposed to higher testosterone levels, they tend to become bisexual or homosexual, the doctors add.
Hands give clues to sexuality
Because of the connection between hormone levels and different finger lengths, looking at someone's hands could actually give an indication of their sexuality. (as)
