Alcohol is still a social problem
A glass of wine with dinner, a beer after work or with friends: for many, alcohol is a natural part of everyday life. But not everyone is aware of how they are harming their bodies. For a long time, the view was that a daily glass of red wine was healthy for the heart and the vessels.
There is no proper amount of alcohol
Last summer, a large meta-study, published in The Lancet, warned that there is no safe amount for alcohol. In any case, no limit can rule out a health risk, according to researchers at the University of Washington. Negative influences and the overall risk outweigh the minor positive effects, according to the authors.
The awareness of the problem is still too low
The World Cancer Research Fund links more than 200 diseases to alcohol consumption. Physical damage from alcohol includes impairment of the organs, especially the liver, which has to break down the alcohol, and the pancreas. Obesity, high blood pressure and dementia can also be related.
Alcohol has great addictive potential
The addictive potential of alcohol poses a great danger: The Federal Government's drug commissioner notes that around 1.3 million people nationwide are considered alcohol-dependent. And 9.5 million people consume alcohol in a “health risk form”. The awareness of the problem in the population is still low.
Alcohol also increases the risk of cancer
What some people may not be aware of is that alcohol clearly increases the risk of cancer. According to the cancer information service of the German Cancer Research Center, wine, beer and other alcoholic beverages in Europe are responsible for one out of eleven in men and one for 33 out of 33 new women in women. There is evidence that this connection exists for several types of cancer: mouth, throat, larynx, esophagus, intestine, liver and breast cancer - it is also considered probable for stomach cancer and pancreatic cancer.
The more alcohol you drink, the greater the risk of illness. The German Nutrition Society (DGE) wrote a few years ago: The best way to prevent cancer is to completely avoid alcoholic beverages. The overview study from 2018 mentioned at the beginning also suggests this conclusion.
Limit values are not a license for safe consumption
If you don't want to completely ban alcoholic drinks from your life, you should be aware of at least one thing: the recommended maximum daily amount for men is not more than half a liter of beer or a quarter liter of wine (about 24 grams) and for women that Half - observing two non-alcoholic days a week. But there is not a quantity that is harmless to health. (fm)
