Apple cider vinegar is very popular, not only as a salad addition, but also as a healthy home remedy for both internal and external use. Almost small miracles are said to be apple cider vinegar. You can find out in the following lines whether this really applies, when and how apple cider vinegar works, how it is to be used and what possible side effects are possible.


As the name suggests, apple cider vinegar is made from apple juice. This is subjected to fermentation, which then produces acetic acid. The apple cider vinegar is commercially available as clear or cloudy (filtered or unfiltered) and as a conventional or organic product.


When buying apple cider vinegar, you have to pay attention to quality. It is important that the vinegar is made from whole organic apples from regional cultivation and not only from core casings and skins. The apple cider vinegar should not be a so-called fruit vinegar, consisting of a mixed fruit, but really only consist of apples. An unheated, i.e. unpasteurized vinegar should be given preference. Even if the filtered, clear liquid is something for the eye, the natural cloudy is recommended. The suspended matter contained therein is a quality feature. Do not use vinegars that contain any additives, such as sulfur.

Do it yourself recipe

Apple cider vinegar is relatively easy to make yourself. This requires organic apples, two tablespoons of sugar per kilogram of apples, a clean container (for example a large mason jar that can hold up to two liters), clean bottles and a clean cotton cloth.

The vessel must be rinsed very well beforehand, preferably sterilized in boiling water. Then pieces of apple and sugar come into it. The whole thing is poured with water until everything is well covered. The clean cotton cloth comes over it. Every now and then it is stirred and swirled gently back and forth so that no mold develops. When fermentation begins, foam is created - that's what is wanted. After a few days the smell changes, a light essence note slowly penetrates the nose. The apples sink to the floor. The whole thing takes less than two weeks with the addition of sugar. Now strain into a clean container with a cloth, cover it again with a cloth and let it ferment for another four to six weeks. After that, the apple cider vinegar is ready and - filtered through a cloth or a fine sieve - can be filled into a bottle.

During the fermentation, streaks develop that become jelly-like over time. This is the so-called vinegar mother, which also consists of acetic acid bacteria. This does not have to be thrown away, but can contribute to faster development with the next apple cider vinegar approach.

Application internally

Apple cider vinegar contains vitamins, minerals, enzymes and is basic. It also contains apple pectin, which slightly lowers cholesterol. The organic apple cider vinegar is a really inexpensive, healthy home remedy and can be used for many ailments or just to do something good for yourself.

Why sober in the morning before breakfast?

As mentioned above, apple cider vinegar is basic. Sober in the morning before breakfast, this gives the body a real base kick for the day and at the same time the metabolism is stimulated. It is best to mix a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of high-quality honey and a cup of lukewarm water and drink it sober. After about 20 minutes you can have breakfast. If you don't like this procedure before breakfast, drink the healthy mixture whenever you want, but please only a maximum of twice a day. Medicines must not be taken together with the apple cider vinegar (see side effects). A time interval is necessary here.

Blood sugar

Apple cider vinegar is said to have a positive effect on blood sugar, which means it is beneficial for diabetics as well. In addition, the vinegar is considered to promote blood circulation. For use, a teaspoon is dissolved in a cup of lukewarm water once or twice a day and the mixture is drunk. It is best for diabetics to leave out honey.


Apple cider vinegar promotes digestion. The digestive juices are stimulated and this gets the digestive process going. This home remedy is also said to prevent putrefactive bacteria in the intestine. This is not only good for the intestinal flora, but also reduces bloating.

If you have problems with fat digestion, you can try an apple cider vinegar cure. If, for example, meat or vegetables are marinated in a little apple cider vinegar mixed with oil and herbs before roasting, this is more digestible. The vinegar taken after meals should also help with heartburn. However, caution is required here. With a sensitive stomach, this home remedy is not always tolerated. Under no circumstances should the daily dose of two teaspoons be exceeded.

Lose weight

Apple cider vinegar is also said to help you lose weight. This is likely due to its appetite-suppressing and digestive effects.

Draining and purifying

The high potassium content in apple cider vinegar has a draining and detoxifying effect. Daily use supports diets, detoxification and relieves the body.

Oral hygiene

In case of inflammation and minor injuries in the mouth, rinsing with apple cider vinegar water is recommended (½ tsp vinegar on a glass of water). It gargles against bad breath. Pure apple cider vinegar should never be used in the mouth. This attacks the enamel. The diluted version is therefore in no way suitable for long-term use.


If a woman does not want to do without apple cider vinegar during pregnancy, she can continue to use it, but only once a day. Particular attention should be paid to side effects.

External application

Apple cider vinegar is a very simple home remedy. However, the following applies to external use: the vinegar is always used diluted, with a few exceptions. In general, there are three tablespoons of apple cider vinegar per liter of lukewarm water. It is essential to pay attention to quality and purity.

Cleaning the skin

Apple cider vinegar cleanses the skin naturally and, unlike many skin care products, supports the protective acid mantle. The apple cider vinegar-water mixture is used instead of a facial tonic. So after the normal cleaning, with a cotton pad. Then just dab the skin. Greasy areas such as the forehead and nose or individual “pimple areas” respond well to this.

Bath additive

Apple cider vinegar is also said to have a firming effect on the skin. A circulation-enhancing bath, enriched with approximately 200 to 250 ml of apple cider vinegar, should support this. Other good substances can be added to the bath, such as a handful of lavender flowers or rose petals. The lavender flowers have a relaxing effect on the whole body and relieve itching on the skin. Rose petals in turn not only beautify the bath water, but are anti-inflammatory and healing.

If you want to revitalize the whole organism, use an additional decoction of rosemary tea (two tablespoons per 250 milliliters of boiling water, let it steep for ten minutes and then drain) as a bath additive. But be careful: only for people who do not have high blood pressure. Rosemary has a slightly hypotensive effect. The bathing time of a maximum of fifteen minutes is sufficient. After that, the skin is not terry, but only dabbed on very lightly.

Stings, sunburn

Applying apple cider vinegar compresses helps with stings and even mild sunburn. The skin swells faster and the itching is also relieved. The redness subsides. Depending on the size of the affected area, compresses, handkerchiefs or tea towels are dipped into the apple cider vinegar-water mixture (see above), gently squeezed out and then placed on top. It is best to repeat the whole thing several times.

Mosquito bites can also be very carefully dabbed with an ear stick dipped in apple cider vinegar. Wasp or bee stings are covered with a vinegar compress and an ice pack is placed over them. This is a simple, helpful home remedy. The swelling goes back faster and the pain also disappears.


A foot bath with apple cider vinegar can somewhat reduce sweat production. There are about three to four tablespoons of good apple cider vinegar per two liters of warm water. In addition, natural fibers and frequent changing of shoes must of course be observed.

Athlete's foot also responds quite well to treatment with apple cider vinegar. Here the area can be dabbed carefully with a little undiluted apple cider vinegar. If the skin reacts with redness, the vinegar is diluted. With a 20 percent apple cider vinegar mixture, the worn socks can be "sterilized" before washing in the washing machine.

Horny areas can also be treated with undiluted vinegar. If the skin is irritated, please dilute the whole thing here too.

Facial treatment for blemished skin

First, a warm, damp towel is placed on the face for two minutes to open the pores. As already described above, the vinegar is diluted, then a towel is soaked with it and this is placed on the skin. The damp cloth comes over it. The whole thing works for about five minutes, then is washed off with warm water and rubbed off with a damp towel.


As already mentioned for the feet, apple cider vinegar helps to reduce sweat. So it can also be used as a natural deodorant. For this, apple cider vinegar is mixed with water in a ratio of 1:10 and applied to the skin in the armpits and massaged in. The alone gives a fresh feeling and can also be repeated. The effect is supported by the addition of sage. Simply prepare a strong sage tea, let it cool and add it to the vinegar-water mixture. The mixture filled in a small spray bottle makes application easier.

By the way - this home remedy is also suitable as an aftershave. Here, however, without sage.

Itchy skin, psoriasis, skin irritation

Itchy skin areas, psoriasis areas or other skin irritations (for example after shaving) are treated with the vinegar mixture (3 tablespoons per liter of water). Handling is easy with a small spray bottle. Spray on the solution, leave for about ten minutes and then rinse with clear, lukewarm water. Then the skin is treated with normal skin care.

Even dandruff on the scalp is loosened. After washing your hair, just rinse your hair with the above vinegar solution. A great side effect - the hair shines.


Warts are not only gross but also annoying. One of many home remedies is apple cider vinegar. This is undiluted, dabbed with a cotton swab twice a day.

Calf wrap for fever

With the well-known calf wraps, which help quite well with high fever, apple cider vinegar can support the effect a little. You simply add one to two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar to the water in which the wipes for the wraps are dipped.

Apple cider vinegar in the household

Apple cider vinegar can also serve well in the home. For example, this removes limescale in the bathroom and kitchen. Tea edges in cups also respond well to treatment with apple cider vinegar. If the kettle is calcified, soaking with apple cider vinegar helps. Sweat stains in white T-shirts can be removed if they are sprayed with apple cider vinegar, the whole thing can take effect overnight and the shirts only come into the washing machine afterwards.

Side effects

Even a natural home remedy like apple cider vinegar can have side effects. This contains acid, for example, which is not good for everyone. If you experience symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, dizziness or headache after taking it, you should stop it immediately. The same applies to undesirable effects of external use. With extremely sensitive skin, the diluted form can be too strong.

If you take medication regularly, you should ask the doctor before an apple cider vinegar cure whether this is compatible with your medication. When taking diuretics, laxatives and antihypertensives, it might be better to distance yourself from apple cider vinegar.


If used properly, apple cider vinegar can be good for your health. It is important to pay attention to the quality and purity of the vinegar and not to exceed the recommended amounts. In the event of complaints, the intake or external treatment must be stopped. If you take medication, you should definitely talk to your doctor before starting an apple cider vinegar treatment - not all medicines are compatible with this home remedy. (sw)
