Can Orujo Olive Oil Prevent Weight Problems?
More and more people around the world are developing overweight and obesity. Is there an easy way to protect yourself from unwanted weight gain? Orujo olive oil ingested appears to significantly reduce obesity, as well as vascular and inflammatory complications.
The current study by the International University of Catalonia found that dietary orojo olive oil (POCTA) contributes to a significant reduction in obesity in obese mice and causes fewer vascular and inflammatory complications. The results of the study were published in the English-language journal "Nutrients".
What is Orujo Olive Oil?
POCTA is obtained from a by-product (orrujo) of olive oil, which is actually considered industrial waste, but the new study could help to focus more on its biological and nutritional value as a functional food. The oil is produced from the rest of the olives that remain after the extraction of virgin olive oil. Orujo olive oil was formerly often referred to as olive pomace oil.
Mice were fed a high-fat diet for the study
For the study, mice were fed two different forms of food over a period of ten weeks. Once the animals received a high content of saturated fats, which are often referred to as unhealthy fats. The second form of nutrition had the same calorie content, but it also contained orojo olive oil.
Weight reduction by about 30 percent
After the ten weeks, a significant weight reduction of about 30 percent was observed in the mice fed with Orujo olive oil, compared to mice that only consumed a high-fat diet, the research team reports.
Orujo olive oil reduces body fat and protects the liver
For the first time, this study shows that Orujo olive oil in obese animals not only reduces body weight, but also body fat (adipose tissue) and inflammation of the liver, while at the same time reducing insulin resistance and obesity-related vascular dysfunction Researchers.
Further research is needed
These preliminary studies in animals provide very important information about the use of orrujo olive oil as a functional food due to its content of triterpenic acids such as oleanolic acid and maslinic acid as bioactive molecules. The researchers suggest that controlled clinical trials should be conducted prior to determining the therapeutic potential of these molecules to allow conclusions to be drawn about their effects on humans and possible health effects.
Orujo olive oil is a source of bioactive molecules
In contrast to other oils, such as coconut or palm oil, the oil obtained from the olive orujo, a product that has been forgotten in recent years, has become a source of bioactive molecules with great therapeutic potential against obesity and those with the metabolic syndrome developed metabolic disorders, the researchers sum up.
