Corona: Sick leave is reaching a new record high

Sickness in Germany reached a record high in March 2020. The proportion of employees who were reported sick this month was at its highest level in 20 years, as an analysis by the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) shows.

While there has been a report of declining hospital patient numbers and a significant decrease in specialist visits during the previous Corona crisis, the sickness rate has reached a new record high. This could also be explained by preventive sick leave due to the corona pandemic.

Disability certificates evaluated by over five million insured

As the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) writes in a current announcement, sick leave in Germany reached a record high in March 2020.

The current evaluation, for which the TK has evaluated the disability certificates of its approximately 5.3 million insured gainfully employed persons, shows that the proportion of sick registered employees was at 6.84 percent the highest value in 20 years.

For comparison: in 2019 the annual high rate of sick leave was 5.30 percent and in 2018 it was 6.30 percent.

Sick leave due to colds

According to the information, colds are decisive for this increase. Here, too, the statistics show the highest values in 20 years according to the TK.

In the second half of March, the sick leave due to cold symptoms was 2.70 percent. Last year it was only 1.46 percent and 2.42 percent in 2018.

The new diagnosis key for COVID-19 only plays a subordinate role in sick leave. Only 3,304 incapacity cases of all 884,389 cases reported in March 2020 were coded with the diagnosis COVID-19.

A strong cold wave every two years

"We assume that a large proportion of the above-average sick leave can be explained by preventive sick leave due to the corona pandemic," said Dr. Jens Baas, CEO of TK.

"People have followed the recommendation to stay at home as a precaution in case of cold symptoms so as not to endanger others," says the expert.

“As a rule, there is a strong cold wave every two years, which is reflected in high absenteeism. Before Corona, we recorded the highest number of sick reports during the 2017/2018 flu season. ”(Ad)
